Wednesday Just Set Up The Perfect Addams Family Spinoff

Wednesday season 1’s flashbacks set up the perfect Addams Family spinoff series. The characters have been adapted on numerous occasions over the years, with the majority of The Addams Family movies and TV shows following the entire spooky bunch. However, Netflix is taking a new direction with the iconic franchise, as Tim Burton’s Wednesday breaks away from the family unit to focus on the coming-of-age story of the gothic Wednesday Addams. Since Wednesday is a brilliant way to better explore individual members of the beloved macabre family, it’s likely that future spinoffs about different Addams Family characters will follow.

After Wednesday’s mysterious adventures at Nevermore Academy, The Addams Family’s next show could be a prequel story following young Morticia and Gomez. Wednesday season 1 features a few key flashbacks to teenage Gomez Addams and Morticia Frump at Nevermore Academy, which culminated in their roles in Garrett Gates’ death at the 1990 Rave’N dance. Even without flashbacks, Tim Burton’s Wednesday often references Gomez and Morticia’s heyday as teens at the school, which continues to tease an intriguing origin story for The Addams Family’s patriarch and matriarch. Since The Addams Family has never produced a prequel story, young Morticia and Gomez at Nevermore could be the perfect spinoff.

How A Morticia & Gomez Addams Spinoff Could Work

A Morticia and Gomez spinoff could be a continuation of Wednesday’s flashbacks to their time as Nevermore students, following their supernatural origins, Morticia’s reputation as the school’s queen bee, Gomez as the stud who Larissa Weems had a crush on, and their role in Garrett Gates ‘ 1990 deaths. Wednesday explains that Gomez and Morticia were even more in love with each other as teenagers, so The Addams Family could finally explore their love story and how they met at Nevermore. Wednesday has also teased other characters that could be involved, such as young Larissa Weems, Garrett Gates, Noble Walker, Rowan’s mother, Tyler’s mother, Xavier’s father, and cameos from Fester Addams.

The biggest problem with a Morticia and Gomez spinoff is that Wednesday season 1 spoils their most significant conflict at Nevermore. Audiences already know that Garrett stalks Morticia and tries to kill Gomez before Morticia defensively stabs him with a sword. Gomez is arrested but acquitted of Garrett’s murder, with Morticia and Gomez going on to happily marry and have children. Still, their Addams Family spinoff will have plenty more mysteries to address, such as why Hydes were banned while they were at Nevermore, how exactly Gomez and Morticia met, and other sinister developments that Netflix’s Wednesday series has yet to address.

Why The Addams Family Needs A Prequel Show

Throughout different decades, each Addams Family adaptation has taken place during the same era in the family’s history, so the franchise could use a refreshing change by going back to its origins. The Addams family has a rich, gothic history that is often referenced in the movies and TV shows but has yet to be fully depicted. While a prequel would be missing Wednesday and Pugsley, their stories can already be covered in Burton’s Netflix series.

Wednesday is already somewhat of a sequel to the typical Addams Family timeline, as the Netflix series is the first time Wednesday has been portrayed as a young adult. Following Wednesday Addams’ hit coming-of-age show, the franchise should go back in time to explore the love story that produced the spooky family. Even if Morticia and Gomez don’t receive their own spinoff, Wednesday addresses many past eras of the Addams family history that could be adapted into their own prequel series, such as Goody Addams’ battle with Joseph Crackstone, the foundation of Nevermore, and Cousin Itt’s time like Nevermore’s Supreme Shade.
